Downtime in Nevada, Missouri

It's 95F with high humidity in Missouri with some tough rollers ahead, so we took Mikey to a motel for a shower, some real food and a nap. John Crumpler and Tony Trotter guard the door and the bike. Last year this leg was tough on Mike so we decided to prep him for it by taking some much needed downtime during the heat of the day. (That's not Mike on the concrete.)

As you can imagine, the crew is pretty trashed from many sleep-deprived days as well so as Mike naps inside the air-conditioned motel room, the crew naps on the comfortable concrete sidewalks outside the motel room. Who wants to sign up for RAAM crew next year? In all seriousness, while it's not easy, it's a terrific adventure and crew member David Carr didn't want to leave after his shift had finished.

Yo Byron! Check out your last statement about David Carr. I know you guys are running on very little sleep but glad to see you haven't lost your sense of humor. Of course, it's probably a typo but I prefer to think of it as a Freudian slip?! ;-)

Hey Mike! Looking great! Beat that scum bag Robic. Heard about the nasty cr@p they pulled last year. Don't get mad ... GET EVEN! Ya got the best crew chief ever!!! He'll take care of you!!!

Take care ... CARPE DIEM!

The time is finally here! I'm heading out the door at work and will be in Indiana in a few hours! Bringing lots of goodies & cd's...sacrificed lots of valuable space in my suitcase but of course, you're worth it, Mike. :o) Don't worry guys...my bag isn't THAT big.

See you in a few hours. Looking forward to smelly hugs from all of you.

Keep riding hard Mike! We are rooting for you here in Des Moines! I spoke with Cat earlier today and he said it was very inspirational to be a part of your team. (I think he may even ride his bike today ;)

Now that you have your warm up in you can power it to the end!

Cheers!

Hi Mike,
I ran across a gal who with her group rode up to Lakeside on the first leg of your trip. She said that they were the “GO GO Girls” and that you would know who they were. She said that they are all excited about your progress and are wishing the best for you.
My friends and family and their friends are all pulling for you.
You’re doing good.

Mike, keep rockin' on. It sounds like you are still riding strong and ready to make up a few miles. One of my favorite quotes that I say to myself on my long runs is by Thomas Paine.

"The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death."

Here is a little story for you. I was riding home from work last night around 1:00 am and it was just pouring rain. I ran over a broken bottle and flatted. Turned out that my spare was flat also. In the end I was sitting on the side of the road, in a monsoon trying to patch my tube. After a little cussing, I thought about how you were probably suffering at the moment, and said to myself suck it up you only have 5 miles to the house. Stay strong and hammer!
