Peaking in the middle of a race

Believe it or not, Mike just told the crew he's "peaking in the middle of the race" and is starting to feel very good. He had a sluggish morning and wasn't sustaining the speeds he normally does so the motel nap and cold shower did him a lot of good.

The news that MacDonald was only 20 minutes behind at TS#31 also fired him up and he's really rolling now. MacDonald had been sleeping about 3 hours a night and didn't take as much sleep last night which is a big reason he made up so much time. That said, it seems MacDonald has taken a nap break after TS#31 because the crew waited for 45 minutes to see if MacDonald was gaining and he wasn't anywere in sight.

This is Emma Slaughter from Sioux City Iowa....I really think you can win this race. I even think you can make it to 1st place. Don't think about the other guys in the race - just think about what you are doing. Are you seeing a lot of animals out there?? Do you get scared when it gets dark out? my mom wont let me ride my bike in the dark. we keep watching you on our computer - keep going Michael! we are so excited for you!

Hey Mike....I am going to make the big sacrifice in your honor......I will not eat ice cream or Gelato till you get back into first place and win this bike ride......I know, that is an amazing sacrifice to stop eating one of the 2 major food groups but I can survive on the other food group, chocolate.....do you know how many amazing Gelato stores I have to walk by everyday....it was 12 today and I resisted going in and just druelled !!!! Mike, stay focused and consistant........after you win this race, I will fly to San Diego and we will eat some Gelato together at Gelata Vera in San Diego on Washington & India....best Gelato on the West Coast......keep the faith....that other dude is just a little way up the highway and you are reeling him in.....cheers ......Greg White in the Great White North.....ps. how do you keep those white bike pants and jersey looking so clean...

Just saw your average speed at the last station. I guess that nap did you some good. Keep riding like that and you will be in 1st in no time. Enjoy the peace and quiet of your night ride. Be safe and hammer.

Looks like MacDonald's "surge" was a fluke. Glad to hear Mike's feeling good and back in a firm 2nd place spot.

Robic's currently nearing a suburban "racetrack" that would scare the hell out of me, luckily you won't get there until that stretch of road is pretty empty.

Put the hammer down Milke, down give Robic any peac of mind, he may break at any moment.....

In 2003, after losing a close friend in a racing accident, Alexander Vinokourov raced to a phenomenal third place finish in the Tour de France. Going into the race not considered a serious contender, he was beaten only by the legendary Lance Armstrong and Lance’s number one rival, Jan Ullrich. Mike, your extraordinary gifts of endurance and perseverance are something few of us can even imagine. Now, as you continue to press forward, may the weight on your shoulders from the loss of your competitor and the burdens ahead turn to adrenaline to fuel your gift, as it did for Vino.

Michael,

Gotta tell you this... Maria and Angela are sitting here in Sioux City with your sister Katherine on cell, talking like they are RAAM experts... I can only hope you have half as much knowledge about this race that they do. If so, you are in a great position!!!!

Remember.. "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" (Animal House)...

Kick some a$$....Looking forward to some Chili on Thanksgiving!

One of my most FAVORITE songs! The PINA COLADA song!! Ok crew, time for some more singing and don't pretend you don't know this song, 'cause it's a classic!

"Yes I like Pina Coladas And getting caught in the rain, I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne, I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon, And cut through all this red-tape, At a bar called O'Malley's, Where we'll plan our escape."

RIDE ON MIKE!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!
