Some very bad luck today -- separated shoulder -- Mike officially withdraws from RAAM
I hate to report this but Mike fell off his bike a couple hours ago and separated his shoulder. "He was looking back for just a second and hit a little bump that took him down," explained Byron. "We talked about continuing but he would've had to ride with one arm the rest of the way and that's just not safe."
RAAM rules also prohibit riders from taking any kind of pain medication and Mike's in enough pain right now that it wouldn't make sense to continue.
Mike has officially withdrawn from the race as of a half hour ago. Total bummer. But, hey, these things happen. It's been one of those rides.
The crew is collecting their thoughts, heading to a motel to get some much needed rest and then they'll discuss this stuff over a few beers later this afternoon.
Team Trevino would like to congratulate Juré Robic and all the outstanding Slovenian supporters who've helped him ride this race like a true champion. We also appreciate all the kind words and encouragement from Slovenian supporters. Juré was truly unbeatable this year and has ridden a very impressive race, considering the conditions. We look forward to seeing him cross the finish line first in Atlantic City.
To the rest of RAAM competitors, ride safely and stay strong. And to the family of Bob Breedlove, our thoughts and prayers are still with you.
We'll post an update later today as the crew reflects on today's unfortunate accident. Thanks for everybody's support and positive comments throughout this 7-day event. I know Mike will appreciate reading these comments later and when he's back in San Diego.

We are extremely proud of you Mike. Looking forward to seeing you back in San Diego. Be safe and take care. Thanks to your great crew for all the support.
Sorry to hear about the fall, but thankful that it was only shoulder. Once when I got hurt the PT said that there's always another race. Of course, training for a marathon is nothing like training for the RAAM event - but alot of folks do understand how dissapointed you must feel. Your health and safety have to come first!!!! Great Job, I have enjoyed following you and reading the blog comments.
Although we support Jure, I must say that I am very sorry for this. Mike did great job at RAAM just like his crew and the editor of homepage. Try to look from the positive point: it was 'just' a shoulder. Jure fell of a bike last year too and had luck that he did not fall under some vehicle. These things happen, our Marko Baloh also had a pneounomia.
Mike, we wish you fast return to bike!
Best wishes from Slovenia
Hey Mike! Too bad about the crash. Now we can rehab our shoulders together this summer! Excellent job on the race once again this year Mike and crew and web site team. Hope you have a relaxing rest in Atlantic City, and I look forward to seeing you back in SD. Best wishes, JR@QC
Hi Mike,

Hey, do they have a tandem division??

Congratualations on a Great Ride, Mike.
I know you must be disappointed.
But, I am just very relieved you are ok.
You and the Crew have alot to be proud of. Those of us at home suffered every waking hour just knowing what you were going through. It isn't easy sitting at home waiting for news and wondering if everything is ok.
Jure is to be congratulated for his amazing performance. He deserved to win this year.
Hold your head high. You captured our imaginations and our hearts!
Love Dad
you're still a winner, mike. a champ with true integrity and honor with a crew to match! looking forward to the remainder of the year and to next year's raam!!!

Mike,
Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad to hear you'll be o.k. - that's far and away the most important thing. Finish line or no finish line, what you accomplished is mind boggling - what an inspiration! You did a great job and we're proud to claim you as a fellow born and raised midwesterner.
Take care and get well soon.

That's too bad Mike - our whole family was pulling for you and will do the same next year. You've captivated quite a few from back home. Keep up the good work.
Mike - So, so sorry to read about the accident. I have really enjoyed following along your adventure and cheering you on from a distance (it all makes my just-finished German bike trip look even more like the walk in the park that it is!!). I hope you recover quickly. All my best to you and your crew - you're all amazing!

Mike- You did an amazing job!! So sorry to hear about the shoulder!! They say everything happens for a reason, but it sure doesn't always make sense. I did the SD Int'l tri this morning and every time I wanted to slack off, I thought, "DUDE, MIKE HASN'T SLEPT IN LIKE 7 DAYS AND HAS BEEN RIDING NON-STOP! SUCK IT UP!" It worked and kept me in line! :) San Diego is ready for your return, and let me tell you the weather has been FABULOUS!! Pizza Port and beer in your honor tonight!! :)
Michael - we are very sorry to hear about your accident. But, we are incredibly grateful that you are ok. We have truly enjoyed following you this week - you are a WINNER through and through. Hold your head high Mike - and be extremely proud of yourself and your ride these past 7 days.
Always,
Jason and Maria Slaughter & kids
Dude, You're still amazing!! We're so sorry to hear about the accident. You're safe & sound now and had a great race. Can't wait to celebrate with you back in San Diego. We'll get some drinks in ya so you're ready for Ragbrai?? Have a safe trip home to everyone! Stevo & Jules
Mike .. you must be deeply disappointed. I am so sorry for your accident and am glad that you were not hurt worse. Who knows the reason(s) 'WHY?' - and ultimately it doesn't matter. You did an awesome job and inspired many who watched and supported you via the web. Take care and may you have a fast and complete recovery!!
You've ridden an inspired ride Mike! We're incredibly grateful that you are going to ok.
Be good to yourself. Can't wait to see you and Amanda when you return to SD.

Hey Mike,
I am so sorry to hear about your injury! I know how disappointed you must feel. You raced a great race, and once again proved your ultra-endurance and exceptional athletic ability. We all know this is not the last of Mike Trevino!!
Hang in there and be safe on the trip back home to San Diego.
- Dina
Mike, you don't know us but we watched your performance via this Web site in awe. You are an amazing athlete. Thanks for letting us share in your experience. I hope you realize we still think what you did is amazing and we know you must be really disappointed but we're so glad you were not hurt that bad. Take care and thank you again for helping inspire me to exercise more.

I don't care what anyone else says....thank you for entering this race and showing RAAM what you got. You made this a race worth watching. I am so inspired by your efforts and "never give up" attitude. I'll be looking for you next time.
P.S. Maybe Dave Carr isn't that bad......but.......

Mike,
ahhhhh, so so so bummed for you, but ever so grateful you are safe, with your mates, bed, beer and some pain killers. Guess it wasn't meant to be this year.
All our best, you are a champ in our minds!

Hi Mike,
Sorry to here about your fall. I just wanted to thank you for the strain you took to give us a little glimpse of what it feels like to ride across America. I was very excited every day to read your reports and see the pictures.
Thank you very much!
Greetings from Switzerland,
David.
Dear Mike,
"Peculiar journeys are dancing lessons from the gods." It is one of my favorite sayings. Many have written about journeys, roads and paths, but you blazed a trail that "inspired imaginations and hearts," more than you will ever know,... even if you never ride again.
Carlsbad said kinda what your Grandpa would have said, " These things happen, Mike. It is always for a good reason, even if we don't know why. "
Another of my favorite sayings is a cosmic joke. " Do you know how to make God laugh ? ....... Tell him your plans. "
Next year, God willing, I'm planning a vacation to Atlantic City, about a week after Father's Day.
Love to you, your family,
friends, crew, and those you inspired ~ always and forever,
Lyndah W.T.
Hi Mike.....very happy to here that you are OK and will recover for hit the deck......you are our hero......Greg White from the Great White North.............
damn. I was all ready with a year-long coaching program about not leaving it too late to close the gap to the leader...
Now we have to talk about bumps in the road?
Well, come on back and let's get started.
Jeff
Mike,
congrats on another extraordinary chapter! Glad you're okay after the fall... looking forward to cheering you on next year.. your Big Red - Hawkeye fans in Delaware.. :-)
You've been an inspiration to me. I love your spirit. A lot of people would have folded when Jure built a lead. It's the guy in second place that has the opportunity to show his real character.
Too bad you've been "snake-bit" this whole ride. But as an athlete you know there are some races like that. Hope you heal fast and get back to doing all the things you love. Next time you race, I hope you can leave "Murphy" at home.
Take care and thanks to the wonderful people who put together this site and blog. It was really great to get those updates.
Mike:
Congratulations for a great effort. Sorry to learn about the fall, but glad your injury isn't major. We are very proud of your race. Next year it will be your turn to win. Be well and heal quickly. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

mike- you may not have won this race, but you are still a hero to me! your my Elvis. lol. i feel your pain. i also have some back, neck head, and shoulder problems, but your tough and you your through a fit, i kept my head held high (even though it really hurt) and well it still really hurts but i know soon i could be you. and i want to be. your the coolest person i know. i knew something like this was going to happen to you, but everyone is thankful it wasnt worse, but your mike trevino, you can do anything! i send all my love from fort dodge.
Olivia
what i ment to say was you wouldnt through a fit. LOL!!!!!!!!!!
Michael-
Dave & I are so proud of you. And we are so sorry about the fall. You put the pazazz in our last week, just following your progress. What a competitor you are! Our thoughts are with you. Heal fast and hopefully you will be in Fort Dodge in the near future and I'll get to give you a hug.
sue
Well Mike, like everyone else I am sad yet glad that you are okay. Like this event isn't the hardest thing ever to begin with...I knew you must be in pain when I heard the news as I told my friend that you are the type of person that would only stop if (maybe) you were having to drag yourself to the finish line with multiple broken bones!
I think you know that we all just really care about you and admire your continuous effort and drive to accomplish "the amazing"...what ever it is. You are and will always be a winner in the most spectatular way, no matter what!!!
Hugs to you all!
Sorry to hear about the bad news. You are still an amazing athlete.I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.
Hope to see you next year(and Jure too)
Best wishes from Slovenia
SHUCKS!! You are an amazing competitor and I'm just so in awe of you in this race. Don't let this get you down... you know you'll come back even faster next year. I'm glad you opted not to finish on that shoulder... I rode 52 miles with a broken elbow in RAGBRAI a fews years ago. NOT FUN! (But please don't think I'm at all implying they are on the same scale.) ;) So... take some time to relax, have a cocktail, and enjoy your summer. All the best from CO.
Erin Welch
Mike...it wasn't to be this year, but you are a true champion. I am certain that it is a huge disappointment to not be able to finish. This ride is a metaphore for life. It doesn't always end with a result we want, but millions have never tried and you have. Next year perhaps. And even if you follow a different dream from from this point in your life, you have done yourself a great service by fighting the fight. I am glad that I got to follow your ride. Best wishes and prayers for a fast recovery. And thanks to the crew that supported you so well. Dwight
Mike
I can only imagine the frustration of being so close and working so hard to kick on this ride, to wind up crashing. Glad your crash was in a safe place and it was not a career ending injury. I honor your decision to end your bid at this years RAAM, and am inspired by your great judgement.
The manner in which you compete and ride is an inspiration to me, and I appreciate all the effort you give to achieve your highest potential. We can all learn a lot from you and the examples you set on the bike and in knowing when to get off.
Warm regards
David James
